Gorillaz at Merriweather Post Pavilion

Gorillaz comprises English singer Damon Albarn, known for his stint with Blur, and English comic book artist Jamie Hewlett. The band emerged in 1998 and released their self-titled debut album in 2001. The album’s sound was a blend of hip-hop, electronic, and world music. Albarn and Hewlett experimented with many instruments and genres while producing the album. Thus, fans and critics praised the band for its post-modern approach and being ahead of its time. Gorillaz found stellar success upon releasing the debut album’s hit single, “Clint Eastwood.”

Despite never appearing on music videos and using cartoon characters as band members (who actually had done some press interviews), Gorillaz found mainstream success with their studio albums. Notably, their sophomore album, Demon Days, debuted at number 1 in the U.K. and number 6 in the U.S., while their third effort, Plastic Beach, peaked at number 2 in both countries. The band’s latest album, Song Machine Season One: Strange Timez, was released in 2020 and peaked at number 2 and number 12 in the U.K. and the U.S., respectively.

Gorillaz has received numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, three Billboard Video Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards, and a Brit Award.
